A part of my practice includes giving workshops and working with participants of different ages —children, students, and designers— to explore (graphic) design and research through making. The workshops often include several printing techniques such as cyanotype, risograph, and silkscreen, as well as making posters, collages, zines, and protest banners.
My workshops combine craft and content, connecting hands-on creation with research and creative reflection. Each session is experimental and engaging, encouraging participants to explore ideas, techniques, and concepts in a playful yet thoughtful way.

Voor Michiel—De onvindbare Arnhemse kunstenaar
Café Vrijdag is een begrip voor vele Arnhemmers. Het café huist zich op een hoek van een drukke straat. Vrijdag verwelkomt zijn stamgasten, variërend van wekelijkse tennisclubjes, doorgewinterde kroegtijgers, tot een paar verloren "verwarde types van de kunstacademie". Bij die laatste groep hoorde ik de afgelopen vier jaar. Tijdens mijn studententijd heb ik ontelbare avonden versleten met mijn klasgenoten, die daar mijn vrienden werden. En werkbesprekingen veranderden in Vrijdag tot diep in de nacht buiten biertjes drinken.
De nederige klusjas en de vrouw die zomaar is
Afgelopen week was schrijver Heleen van Royen te gast in de podcast Met Groenteman in de kast waarin ze terugblikt op haar schrijverschap. Tegen het einde van de aflevering zegt van Royen: "Het leven is nog maar zo weinig fysiek, door het internet of deze tijd alleen al. We moeten 1,5 meter afstand houden, al sinds maart! Fysiek contact is een schaars goed geworden en we vergeten soms dat we een lichaam hebben." Niet dat ze die 1,5 meter niet begrijpt, maar toch ziet ze het als haar missie ons eraan te herinneren dat we niet alleen een geest hebben.
Galerie Fons Welters opende afgelopen maand de deuren voor twee verschillende exposities. Die deuren zijn nu helaas weer gesloten, maar openen weer zodra het kan. De twee tentoonstellingen lijken de noodkreet van Van Royen te beantwoorden. In de eerste ruimte is de show Georgics (How to style a chore coat) van Tenant of Culture (Hendrickje Schimmel) te zien. De tweede ruimte laat werk zien van kunstenaar Femmy Otten met de expositie One tear at the time. De twee kunstenaars reageren met het werk op de relatie tussen tijd, geschiedenis en het lichaam.

Huis van vriendschap
In kunstruimte Nest in Den Haag staat op dit moment ‘III She spins the thread, she measures the thread, she cuts the thread’ te wachten op haar bezoekers. In deze tentoonstelling onderzoeken kunstenaars Mila Lanfermeijer, Ana Navas en Evelyn Taocheng Wang de betekenis van herhaling, waardering en toe-eigening. De kunstruimte is omgebouwd en herverdeeld in zeven kamers, ontworpen door architect Donna van Milligen Bielke. Iedere kamer heeft een thema waar de kunstenaars op reageren.
Het verborgen sprookje en de buitengesloten bezoeker
Welcome Stranger is een kunstinitiatief dat 29 jaar geleden is opgericht door Marjolein Schaap en Ken Zeph. De manifestatie begon als een kanttekening op het officiële kunstcircuit. De tentoonstellingen vonden plaats in de publieke ruimte of in een privé-vertrek van een kunstenaar. De locatie is een terugkerend belangrijk onderwerp in de edities van Welcome Stranger en thema’s zoals openbaarheid en privacy spelen een grote rol. In de jaren 90 zijn er door de jaren heen tien edities geweest waarin kunstenaars werden uitgenodigd om te reageren op deze thema’s en op elkaar.

is a Dutch, Rotterdam-based graphic designer who uses curiosity and fun as guiding principles in her practice.
Esmée works within cultural and museal contexts, designing visual identities, publications, spatial graphics and participatory formats. She is particularly interested in how narratives can be expressed, and enjoys working at the intersection of research, graphic design and spatial design. Her fun comes alive while exploring ways to translate matter and stories into design.
Scale plays an important role in her practice. She feels equally at home designing small printed matter as creating large-scale design within spatial and architectural contexts. Esmée is a graphic designer who is drawn to spacial works, as well as a spacial thinker who thinks in (typo)graphic terms. Both are in constant exchange.
Alongside commissioned design work, Esmée develops workshops and writings and frequently initiates ideas together with collaborators or clients when she senses potential. On this website you’ll find her work, workshops and writings connected through an ongoing curiosity for form, space and narrative.
Esmée works as an assistant to graphic designer Hansje van Halem since 2024. From 2026 onwards, she will join the Nieuwe Instituut as a graphic designer.
